Paige Patterson Praises

Book cover: "The Depression Proof Church"

The Depression Proof Church

Paige Patterson, past president of the 16-million member Southern Baptist Convention, and a leader in the conservative resurgence of the 70's and 80's, has endorsed Frank Becker's new book, The Depression Proof Church: The Biblical Answer to the Church in Crisis.

This important new book thoroughly explores the crisis, exposing the frustrations, summarizing the symptoms, revealing the causes, and detailing how a return to biblical principles and practices will build up individual believers and revitalize the Church.

In reviewing the book, Patterson wrote: “Frank Becker...has clearly enunciated the one essential...we have to recover the New Testament pattern for churchmanship.”

The author — former businessman, talk show host, educator, and pastor — exposes how the Church has become mired in a crisis of its own making. He says that, “Instead of turning the world upside down, we've turned the Church inside out.” "The Church is depressed," he says, "because it is failing, and it is failing because it has forsaken the very practices that New Testament believers found essential to fulfilling the Great Commission.

“Instead of assisting those in need and promoting the gospel,” Becker convincingly argues that, “our leaders are exhausting our donations and our energies to create institutions. Instead of involving believers, pastors are entertaining them. And, in their pursuit of bodies, buildings, and bucks, our preachers often water down the word.”

Pastor Becker opens the book by quoting numerous respected leaders who have from time to time addressed the growing crisis.

Among these are Franklin Graham who declared, “Our churches are dead,” James Dobson who acknowledged that evangelicals have lost the culture wars, and Rick Warren who prophesied that, “The Future of Christianity is Not Europe or North America.”

Dr. Patterson's review brushed aside potential debate over secondary issues. “Even if a pastor finds individual matters with which he disagrees, the fact that Frank Becker ... has clearly enunciated the one essential, namely a return to the church of the New Testament, is worthy of note anywhere, anytime.”

Paige Patterson (Continued)

Becker pointed out that, “The fact that very few books focus on biblical practices demonstrates how far we've departed from New Testament values. People who are not intensely involved are not happy.

Our failure to adhere to apostolic practices, and our resultant inability to immerse believers in the life of the church, hints at the source of the schism that divides the Christian world, a growing struggle for the hearts and minds of those who must choose between an active conservative or a passive liberal view of Scripture — and that choice is a life-changing 'to be or not to be' decision.”

As president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Dr. Patterson is very concerned about Christianity's slide toward liberalism. In praising

The Depression Proof Church, he said: “In a day of 'how to' manuals on church growth and effectiveness, to find a writer who tells the truth...is a breath of fresh air.”

The Author

Frank Becker entered the ministry in 1970. His unique background in business, politics, radio, and pastoral work opened doors of fellowship with numerous leaders in diverse churches and denominations, and enabled him to gain unique insights into the state of the Church.

It seems incredible that a conservative Christian has been invited to share the gospel with so many diverse groups, denominational and non-denominational, including Baptist, Congregational, Christian and Missionary Alliance, Holiness, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Reformed, and even Messianic.

Pastor Becker has served as president of Cross Trainers Ministries since 2005. He lives with his wife, Joy, near Houston, where he is a speaker, writer, and, when time affords, painter.

India Mission Program Terminated

It is with a deep sense of regret that after six years and nearly $40,000 in support, the Board of Directors of Cross Trainers Ministries, Inc announces the necessity of terminating support of Issac Raju a/k/a Pastor Kailay Raju a/ka KailayLeela, because of growing irregularities in Kailay Raju's handling and reporting of funds. In spite of receiving a number of written confessions from him, he has not to this time kept his promises to make corrections, and indeed appears to be broadening his efforts to raise funds in any way he can.

Those who have contributed funds toward construction of a new orphanage building in 2011 have been offered the option of a refund of their gifts, or to designate them for other purposes. Please keep Kailay Raju in prayer, as the conduct of such men reflects on the worldwide church.
